Noken : Traditional Bag From Papua


Noken is a traditional bag of Papuan people brought by head and made of bark fiber. Same with the bag in general this bag is used to carry goods daily needs.

Papuans usually use it to carry agricultural products such as vegetables, tubers and also to bring goods to the market. Because of the uniqueness that is brought with the head, this noken is registered to UNESCO as one of the traditional works and cultural heritage of the world and on 4 december 2012, the typical Papuan community is defined as UNESCO's cultural heritage.

"This UNESCO recognition will encourage efforts to protect and develop the cultural heritage of Noken, owned by more than 250 ethnic groups in the provinces of Papua and West Papua,"

Made from raw materials of Manduam tree wood, Nawa tree or Orchid forest. Papuans usually use Noken for various activities, large Noken is used to carry goods such as firewood, crops, groceries, or even used to carry a child. While the small size is used to carry personal items. The uniqueness of Noken also functioned as a memento gift for guests and used in ceremonies.

Making Noken is quite complicated because it does not use a machine. The wood is processed, dried and then spun into yarn. The color variations on Noken are made from natural dyes. The process of making can reach 1-2 weeks, for Noken with large size, can reach 3 weeks. In the area of Sauwadarek, Papua, we can still find the making of Noken directly. Noken price there is relatively cheap, between Rp.25.000-Rp.50.000 per piece depending on the type and size.
