Biak is a small island located in Cendrawasih Bay near the north coast of Papua Province, Indonesia. Biak's position is to the northwest of Papua New Guinea. Biak is the largest island among small island chains, and has many atolls and coral reefs.
In the past, the island of Biak including the territory of the Tidore Sultanate which divides it into 9 districts (uli siwa). In World War II, a strategic airstrip belonging to Imperial Imperial Japan was there as a command base in the Pacific War. The US Army then controlled the island. On May 29, 1944, inter-tank fighting took place in Biak.
Biak belongs to Indonesia from the Dutch grip, along with Irian Jaya (Papua), the 1960s. In 2005, the Russian government committed itself to launch rockets and satellites from Biak Island due to its strategic location and not far from the ocean.
Administratively, Biak Island is divided into 2 districts: the west part is Supiori District, while the eastern part of the Biak Numfor District.
